Home Exercises After Hip or Knee Replacement – Safe Recovery in Herefordshire & Worcestershire

3/5/20261 min read

Recovering from a joint replacement can feel overwhelming, but home-based support helps you regain mobility comfortably and safely. At Home Support Physio, we specialise in post-operative physiotherapy for older adults across Worcester, Malvern, Hereford, and surrounding areas.

Early recovery focuses

Follow your surgeon’s advice first. Gentle movement reduces stiffness, swelling, and improves circulation without strain. Safe starting exercises: Do these lying or sitting unless advised otherwise.

1. Ankle Pumps – Point toes away, then pull toward you. Repeat 10–20 times. Prevents blood clots and eases swelling.

2. Quad Sets – Tighten thigh muscles to press knee down (use a towel roll under knee if needed). Hold 5 seconds. Strengthens quads for knee stability.

3. Heel Slides – Slide heel toward bottom, bending knee gently. Straighten slowly. Improves range without forcing.

4. Straight Leg Raises – Lift straight leg 6–12 inches, hold briefly. Builds hip/knee control.

Progressing safely

As you improve, add mini-squats or supported walks. We monitor progress during home visits to adjust for your home environment.
