Living with a respiratory condition such as COPD, asthma, bronchiectasis or the lingering effects of pneumonia can make simple daily tasks feel exhausting. Shortness of breath, coughing, and fatigue often limit what you can do. The right physiotherapy techniques, delivered comfortably in your own home, can make a real difference to how easily you breathe and how much energy you have for the things that matter.
Claire Taylor-Edwards regularly supports older adults and their families across Worcestershire and Herefordshire with gentle, practical breathing and movement strategies. These complement any hospital pulmonary rehabilitation you may have attended and continue the benefits long after formal programmes end.
Understanding breathlessness: Breathlessness in chronic lung conditions often comes from weakened breathing muscles, trapped air, or mucus buildup. Learning controlled breathing techniques and gentle exercise helps your body use oxygen more efficiently and reduces the feeling of struggling for air.
Key techniques that help many clients:
Pursed-lip breathing: Breathe in gently through your nose for a count of two, then breathe out slowly through pursed lips (as if blowing out a candle) for a count of four or longer. This keeps airways open longer, reduces trapped air, and can ease breathlessness during activity or at rest.
Diaphragmatic (belly) breathing: Sit or lie comfortably with one hand on your belly. Breathe in through your nose so your belly rises while your chest stays relatively still. Breathe out slowly. This strengthens the diaphragm and promotes calmer, deeper breathing.
Active cycle of breathing: A simple sequence many people find helpful — breathe normally, then take a deep breath in, hold briefly, huff out (a short sharp exhale), and finish with relaxed breathing. This can help clear secretions without forceful coughing.
Gentle movement to support breathing: Short, controlled walks around the house, seated marching, or arm exercises while focusing on breathing rhythm can improve overall fitness without overwhelming the lungs. Start very gently and build tolerance.
Positioning for easier breathing: Sitting upright or leaning slightly forward with arms supported (for example on a table) can make breathing feel easier during flare-ups or exertion.
Daily routines that help: Many clients benefit from 10–15 minutes of breathing exercises and light movement most days. Examples include seated arm raises coordinated with breathing, gentle marching in place, or short indoor walks while practising pursed-lip breathing.
Carers can support by learning the techniques themselves, reminding loved ones to use them before activities, and creating a calm environment during practice.
Home physiotherapy offers unique advantages: Claire can assess your specific breathing pattern, lung function limitations, and home layout, then create a personalised programme. She can also advise on airway clearance techniques suitable for your condition and monitor progress safely.
These self-help guides provide general ideas to try safely at home, but they are not a replacement for professional assessment, especially if you have been diagnosed with a respiratory condition. Always check with your GP or respiratory team before starting new exercises.

Gentle movement such as seated marching or short indoor walks, combined with good positioning, can improve fitness without overwhelming the lungs. This often forms part of our Senior Rehabilitation or Tailored Treatment Plans.
