Building Strength and Balance for Everyday Independence in Later Life

Strength and Balance Exercises for Older Adults at Home – Herefordshire & Worcestershire Mobility Support

3/5/20261 min read

Maintaining strength and balance lets you enjoy daily life – from walking to the shops to standing safely. Natural changes happen, but consistent, gentle activity helps you stay independent longer.

Why focus on strength and balance

Strong legs and core support joints; good balance prevents stumbles. Home exercises fit easily into routines.

Safe home exercises

Use support (chair/wall) and stop if painful.

1. Seated Marches – Sit tall, lift one knee at a time like marching. 10–15 per leg. Builds hip flexors gently.

2. Wall Push-Ups – Hands on wall, bend elbows to lean in, push back. Strengthens upper body and core.

3. Supported Single-Leg Stand – Hold support, lift one foot slightly. Hold 10–30 seconds. Improves stability.

4. Chair Squats – Stand/sit slowly from chair edge. Strengthens thighs and glutes.

Combine with walking short distances daily. Progress gradually.
